Pain and high heels: unique treatment in France

Symbol of feminine elegance, high heels radically alter the silhouette making women thinner and more slender. Unfortunately, the high heel alters the body pression that passes from the heel bone of our front foot, creating a painful discomfort that is accentuated over the years.

Today, the visco-supplementation by hyaluronic acid injection combined with the diagnosis of a podiatrist by baropodometry allow to sustainably replenish sufficiently thick pads to cushion again and painlessly the shocks received by walking in high heels.

Anatomical reminder

The skin of the foot, called footpad is very specific. It is composed of partitioned fat lobules and numerous proprioceptive receptors:

  • The fat lobules provide a damping function,
  • Proprioceptive receptors allow the foot stability and the balance of the whole body.

The 2 causes of the onset of pain

1) Foot aging

Over the years, the progressive atrophy of pads generates two types of consequences:

  • An appearance of mechanical pain (metatarsalgia) when supporting and a thickening of the skin (callosity); and
  • Deterioration of proprioception with loss of balance.

2) The role of the heel height

The heel height fundamentally changes the distribution of body weight on the foot, transferring it to the front foot and accelerating the wear of pads:

  • flat: 70% of the weight on the heel of 30% on the forefoot;
  • 2 cm heels: balanced distribution with 50% on the heel and forefoot;
  • 5 cm heels: inversion of the distribution with 30% on the heel & 70% on the forefoot;
  • 10 cm and more: 90% of the weight, and even more, on the forefoot !

The treatment is particularly indicated at the first signs of pain to avoid total breakdown of pads. However, the foot can of course be treated even years after the first signs of discomfort have appeared.

Treatment: diagnosis and visco-supplementation by injection of hyaluronic acid

Step 1: Diagnosis by baropodometry

Mandatory examination: baropodometry provides the essential information for the analysis of balance disorders and distribution of mechanical stress.

Doctor Foumenteze works along with the sport specialist podiatrist Florent Audat. He works with a baropodometric track consisting of 16,000 sensors to diagnose all the pressure zones exerted on the foot.

The examination is done in 2 steps :

Step 2: visco-supplementation by injection of hyaluronic acid

Viscosupplementation involves the injection of a hyaluronic acid of similar consistency to footpad. The aesthetic doctor will inject the product following the injections points defined by the podiatrist following the diagnosis by baropodometry and stabilometry.

The products used are based on hyaluronate. This is a cross-linked and flexible hyaluronic acid to effectively support the weight of the body. In addition, these injections are painless, as performed under local anesthesia and under control of a podiatrist. Finally, the patient can start walking immediately after the procedure.

This technique is used since the 90s in the treatment of osteoarthritis. It is now well known and very common in the treatment of joints such as the knee, hip, ankle, shoulder or the base of the thumb. In addition, the visco-supplementation by hyaluronic acid injection has proven itself for more than three years in the treatment of pain due to atrophy of the footpad due to wearing high heels.

All these years bring a very significant hindsight in this medical procedure. There is no cons-indication.

Result: total and lasting pain relief to walk within 48h

Until recently, despite many attempts, never the mechanics part of footpads could not be reproduced. Now, this treatment offers immediate correction of the pressure distribution on the forefoot through the reconstruction of the pads by injections of hyaluronic acid.

The result of the reconstruction of the pads is a death in 24 to 48 hours of pain with walking, combined with a restoration of balance.

The durability of this result is of 6 to 12 months, with the possibility of reproducing the processing as many times as desired by the patient.
